Stanley's No. 110 Rabbet PlaneWhat's that you say? Stanley didn't make a No. 110 Rabbet plane...Oh contraire, I have one... Okay, so I had to make it myself...it really isn't all that hard to do. First, you need a No. 110...preferably a cheap one!!! This No. 110 I got at the flea market for $1. The knob was busted, but all there so it was an easy fix with a little super-glue and some rubber bands.
Every good project starts with a plan...here's the plan for this one!
Next I need to transfer the design to the sides of the plane...so I made a pattern drawing on a piece of onion-skin (tracing paper). This way I can get the drawing of the opening close to the same on both sides.
Now I could use Prussian Blue or Dykem (sp), but I decided to just put masking tape on the sides of the plane and transfer the design to it. The tape will also help keep me from scaring the sides of the plane...
I transferred the drawing to both sides of the plane and then I drilled a large hole in the center of the area to be opened on both sides in order to get access to work with my Dremmel tool and files. I don't have any "in progress" pictures as I tend to get carried away. but here is a picture of the openings roughly finished....
Then I spent a little time cleaning it up...till it looked like this...
Then it was on to the blade...rather than braze, solder, rivet or bolt an extension onto the blade I decided I would just make a new blade from some 01 tool steel of the appropriate thickness.
I cut the blade out with a hacksaw and then rounded the top and cleaned it up with files. Did a rough grind on the blade cutting edge, and then refined it a little on my sharpening plate. After I heat treat and relieve the blade I will finish sharpening it.
Once I got the blade roughed out I discovered that in order to get the blade into the plane the front of the mouth opening would have to be relieved to get the blade to slip into place.
This resulted in a rather large mouth opening, but I don't see any way around that problem.
As you can see from this shot not only is the mouth large but I need to work on the bedding of the blade . Other than some refining and heat treating the blade this project is complete...I now have a rabbet plane...
Here is a sorta before and after shot...
Another fun project... © Roy Griggs
